Sukumvit road is Urbane and complicated.
At night when it’s rainy, certain parts of it are reminiscent of Blade Runner, with noodle sellers at ground level plying their trade in the shadow of towering innovative sky scrapers.
Busy Sukhumvit Road offers a well-liked alternative to the more spiritual side of Bangkok. Stretching east to west from middle Bangkok to the suburbs , it begins at Ratchaprasong junction and continues all the way out of the capital and beyond.
Sukhumvit is the longest road in Thailand. With the vast amount of traffic it carries and with the BTS Sky Train running along much of its length, it serves as a feeder to the lesser sois ( side streets ) that run off Sukhumvit. Numerous of these adjoining ’sois’ are poor on conventional tourist attractions but wealthy in high class shopping, worldwide eateries and top class nightlife. While there are still touches of Thai culture on every corner, the many chic restaurants, bars, air – conditioned malls, luxury hotels and hip clubs give the area a distinctly contemporary, international, flavour.
Some of the city’s most bad spots, red – light districts Nana Plaza ( Soi 4 ) and Soi Cowboy ( off Soi 23 ) are also found here. These are the haven of sex tourists and the longer term ‘ sexpats’ who like to indulge in the seedier side of Bangkok’s nightlife. These places are certainly the most horrible areas of Sukhumvit, with taxi and tuktuk drivers looking to rip off Bangkok’s newest tourists.
The Nana area of Sukhumvit has many western conveniences and rich hotels, making it feel very multinational indeed. The fore mentioned tuktuk drivers are enough to detract from this international feeling, but it’s the deseparate bar girls latching on to old fat westerners that really spoils things. They are everywhere, and not just at night, in Star Bucks, McDonalds, Pizza Hut in the middle of the afternoon!
These aren’t real knowledgeable Thai girls. 90 % of them are country girls from the north, living in Bangkok trying to make a fast buck from the sex trade. Dressed in shorts and revealing tops they look like they should be at the beach rather than in a modern city. Around 5 O’clock, the authentic comparison can be made when the Thai office workers leave work. Dressed in formal office wear and looking immaculate, they are a stark reminder that not all Thai girls around Nana are hookers!
Away from the seedier areas of Sukhumvit, stress – busting pockets of calm can be found in the sweet cafes, distinctive restaurants and green day spas that hide down many of its sois. Sukumvit Road is so big and diverse that there is always something for someone and with the Sky Train and its many stations, it’s all pretty simple to explore.
